How to install Songbird On Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon x86_64

(Graphical at the bottom of the post)

Songbird let’s you search for music and download, very easily.
Music is life so I thought I would share how to install Songbird on Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) x86_64.

1. Download the file from the birdnest (birdnest = the website) from the download section located here: http://www.songbirdnest.com/download
Correct file for Kubuntu Gutsy x86_64 would be this one to be exact:

http://download.songbirdnest.com/installer/linux/x86_64/Songbird_0.3_linux-x86_64.tar.gz

:)

It doesn’t matter where you download it to. I have a folder in my home directory titled Downloads which I downloaded the file to.

2. Ok, what you gotta do next is extract the file. Right click it and look under Open With and select Ark.

I think that Ark comes with the fresh installation of Kubuntu 7.10. I’m sure that any other extraction program works just as well. Anyhow, I’m sure that Ark can be installed from Add/Remove Programs, just to note that.

Extract the content to where you want it, I extracted to the same folder that I downloaded the file from the birdnest to. Which is Downloads.

And that’s all you need to do to install.

3. But you want to be able to easily grab it, right? We’ll make a link to it in the menu by right clicking on the K menu (the icon on the panel) and selecting Menu Editor. Highlight Multimeda in the list and click on the icon New Item (or right click and select New Item from there instead). Now on the right side you have a new and clean sheet that we are going to setup Songbird for.

4. For Name you type Songbird
For Command you locate the file named Songbird in the folder that you have extracted. My path to the file Songbird is located through this path: /home/lo/Downloads/Songbird/Songbird.

5. Next we need an icon so first we create a new folder in the Songbird folder which we name Icons. Do this by entering the Songbird folder and right click and select Folder under Create New, name it Icons. Then you choose an icon you like from this website: http://www.songbirdnest.com/getsongbird
Save it to the folder you just created.

6. Back to the KDE Menu Editor, click on that empty space where a icon should be. In the pop up that now appears select the option Other Icons and Browse for the icon you downloaded from the birdnest.

7. That is it. Before you exit the Menu Editor do hit Save in the upper left corner (disc icon). Now it’s in the menu, under Multimedia where you created it.

Like ta da ;-)
